Upstream documentation tells you what a parameter means; tutorials teach a workflow. Read the
documentation for the release you actually run, because a `master` or `latest` page can describe
different defaults from your build.

## Specifications and upstream tool documentation

| [ITU-T H.273](https://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-H.273) | Color-signaling code points. The in-force edition is 07/24. |
| [FFmpeg manuals](https://ffmpeg.org/documentation.html) | Stream selection, encoders, filters, formats, and ffprobe. Your build's `-h` output lists what it actually includes. |
| [x265 documentation](https://x265.readthedocs.io/en/master/) | Native x265 CLI/API controls and release notes. FFmpeg's wrapper is a separate interface. |
| [VapourSynth documentation](https://www.vapoursynth.com/doc/) | Core and Python APIs. External plugin dependencies are separate. |
| [Xiph.Org documentation](https://xiph.org/) | Opus, Vorbis, FLAC, Theora and Ogg project pages. |

Each tool page on this wiki ends with a full option table; [Reading option tables](/reference/encoder-parameters/)
lists them.

## Community workflows

- [Fansubbing Guide](https://guide.encode.moe/) covers fansubbing, filtering, resampling and
encoding. Its introduction says it is still under construction, so check individual examples and
  dependency versions.
- [SilentAperture's Advanced Encoding Guide](https://silentaperture.gitlab.io/mdbook-guide/introduction.html)
covers source preparation, filtering and test encodes for high-quality encodes.
- [lvsfunc documentation](https://lvsfunc.encode.moe/en/latest/) describes VapourSynth helper
functions. The project warns that its public API may change at any time, so pin a package version
  for reproducible scripts.
- [Kokomins' anime/x265 article](https://kokomins.wordpress.com/2019/10/10/anime-encoding-guide-for-x265-and-why-to-never-use-flac/)
walks through x265's psychovisual options (`psy-rd`, `psy-rdoq`, AQ, deblocking, `no-sao`) for
anime. It dates from 2019, so check its values against current x265 defaults.

The old third-party [x264 settings summary](http://www.chaneru.com/Roku/HLS/X264_Settings.htm) still
explains many options well but is not maintained; use [the x264 page](/tools/software-encoders/x264/)
and `x264 --fullhelp` for current values.
