Eve-VP9 is a proprietary [VP9](/codecs/video/vp9/) encoder from Two Orioles, the company that co-developed the [dav1d](/tools/utilities/dav1d/) AV1 decoder. It was the first encoder in Two Orioles' EVE (Efficient Video Encoder) family, and its framework was later extended to [AV1 as Eve-AV1](/tools/software-encoders/eve-av1/).

## Vendor claims

The [product page](https://www.twoorioles.com/eve-vp9) claims nearly 20% better compression than libvpx at the same speed, and nearly 40% better than x264. Its bitrate-reduction table reports totals of −22.26% against libvpx 1.15.1, −38.45% against x264 and −13.82% against x265 4.1 over 19 named test clips. It also lists speed presets and multithreaded encoding. The page does not give the encoder settings or the quality metric behind these numbers, and no independent public comparison was found.

## Availability

Eve-VP9 is licensed commercially, with a subscription for updates and support. Evaluation copies are available on request. There is no public binary, documentation or option reference, and FFmpeg does not include it. Its output is standard VP9, so normal VP9 decoders, browsers and hardware decoders can play it, within the limits of the VP9 profile used.

The open-source VP9 encoder is libvpx; see [vpxenc](/tools/software-encoders/vpxenc/) for recommended settings.
