Encoding transforms information into another representation. For media, that usually means using a codec to make audio, video, images, or subtitles practical to store and distribute.

This section will help you understand:

  • what codecs, formats, encoders, and containers each do;
  • the tradeoff between quality, size, speed, compatibility, and complexity;
  • how lossy and lossless compression differ; and
  • how to recognize and investigate common encoding artifacts.

Most of this material will be migrated from the existing Codec Wiki with explicit attribution and a visible review status.
