Encoding transforms information into another representation. For media, that usually means using a codec to make audio, video, images, or subtitles practical to store and distribute.
This section will help you understand:
- what codecs, formats, encoders, and containers each do;
- the tradeoff between quality, size, speed, compatibility, and complexity;
- how lossy and lossless compression differ; and
- how to recognize and investigate common encoding artifacts.
Most of this material will be migrated from the existing Codec Wiki with explicit attribution and a visible review status.
