Eve-AV1

Eve-AV1 is a proprietary AV1 encoder from Two Orioles, the company that co-developed the dav1d decoder with VideoLabs and MultiCoreWare. It belongs to Two Orioles’ EVE (Efficient Video Encoder) family, which started as a VP9 encoder (Eve-VP9), and is aimed at video-on-demand: high-view-count content where encoding cost is worth spending to save bandwidth.

According to the product page, Eve-AV1 gives about 20% lower bitrate than other AV1 encoders at the same visual quality, or matches their quality at 3–5× the encoding speed. The page backs this with charts (including one labelled “Netflix (720) – June 2025”) but does not say which encoder versions, settings or metrics were compared. No independent public comparison was found, so these figures can’t be checked.

Eve-AV1 is licensed commercially, with a subscription for updates and support. Evaluation copies are available on request through Two Orioles. There is no public binary, documentation or option reference, and FFmpeg does not include it. Its output is standard AV1, so any AV1 decoder or player can play it.

For open-source AV1 encoding, use SVT-AV1 or aomenc. If you evaluate Eve-AV1, compare it with those at several bitrates on your own content, following the quality-comparison guide.
